Dear Families,

We are pleased to let you know that Driver’s Education courses will be offered to eligible students again this year.

The course has two requirements: classroom coursework and driving. Students may choose from the following options:

For this option, students must be at least 14 years old by April 5, 2024. Students will be able to complete coursework requirements online except for the Handbook Exam, which must be taken with supervision. A REQUIRED in-person testing session will take place at EHS on April 12th at 10am, at which time students will take the Handbook Exam and receive their textbook and login information. This session takes 60-90 minutes on average. Students selecting this option will be able to begin coursework on April 12th. Optional virtual and in-person help sessions will be available by appointment. Virtual coursework must be completed by May 24th. The final exam will be on May 28th. Students wishing to select this option must register using the link above before March 25th. Driving will be scheduled by the instructor to occur between June 3rd and July 31st in groups of two to three. Enrollment is limited to 30 students.

Drivers Education is available to USD 490 students who are age eligible by Kansas Law and to out-of-district students if space is available. The class is filled by age prioritization to those who apply and pay fees prior to March 25th for virtual classes and May 6th for summer coursework onsite. The course requires two components: coursework and driving.

Two opportunities for the classroom component will be offered. The first, a virtual course, will be conducted April 6 – May 24, with on-site, supervised tests. Enrollment in the virtual course will be limited to 30. The second, onsite option, will be conducted from 8:30-11 a.m. or 12-2:30 p.m., June 3-27, Monday through Thursday, also at EHS. Pupil teacher ratio for the onsite classroom component is 1:25.

The driving portion of the course will be conducted June 3 – July 30 and is by appointment, scheduled through the instructor. Pupil teacher ratio for driving is 1:3. USD 490 student fee for both components, combined, is $75, prepaid, with no reductions for lunch status. Out-of-district students may enroll if space is available for a fee of $350, also prepaid and not subject to income reductions.
