Each year, students compete against their classmates to be named the school spelling bee champion and earn the right to represent their school at the Butler County Spelling Bee.

The El Dorado Middle School bee was on January 8. There were 14 total rounds, with ten being a one-on-one battle between Sammy Schafer and Jonah Love. In the end, Schafer was named champion after correctly spelling “precariously” and Love was runner-up.

Blackmore’s bee was January 10. It lasted 15 rounds, six of which there were no students who misspelled any words. The final two battled for four rounds before Riley Merchant became the champion after correctly spelling “engulf.” Laila Landoll was runner-up.

Skelly’s bee was January 12. It lasted six rounds. Talia Dickerson was named champion after correctly spelling “furniture.” Cooper Bentz was the runner-up.

Grandview’s bee was January 18. It lasted 17 rounds. Nobody misspelled any words for the first four rounds. The final two went three rounds before Blake Dunbar was named champion after correctly spelling “wisdom.” Jenessa Knapp was runner-up.

All school champions will move on to the Buter County Spelling Bee scheduled for February 2. The runners-up will also attend the bee to cheer on their classmate.
