USD 490 is continuing its commitment to support English as a Second Language (ESL) families through expanded family outreach efforts and a growing partnership with Orion Education.
During the 2024–2025 school year, the district began hosting monthly ESL Family Nights to better understand how to serve families whose first language is not English. These meetings created an opportunity for parents to share their experiences, concerns, and hopes for their children’s education.
One consistent request stood out: parents wanted help learning English so they could more confidently support and advocate for their children.
In response, USD 490 partnered with Orion Education to launch an English class in November 2025. The class currently has eight participants. While some individuals have stepped away due to personal schedules, new participants have joined, keeping enrollment steady.
The program blends online learning with in-person instruction and is offered during a four-hour window twice a week. Participants are not required to attend the full four hours or every session. However, those who are able can take advantage of up to eight hours of in-person learning each week, allowing flexibility for families balancing work and home responsibilities.
Mr. Les Limón, who frequently provides translation services for parents and has led the ESL Family Nights this year, says the impact has been noticeable.
He shared that all participants are making progress in their English-speaking abilities. Over time, the class has grown into more than just a learning space.
Limón says the group has become like a little family, often bringing snacks to share during class sessions and sharing meals family-style during the Family Nights.
Although the current class will conclude at the end of the school year in May, interest remains strong. Plans are already underway to resume classes in the fall, with several participants committing to return.
Creating a Welcoming Space for Families
Beyond language instruction, the monthly ESL Family Nights have played an important role in helping families feel connected and valued within the school community.
For some families, sending their children to school has come with uncertainty and fear amid challenges facing communities across the country. The Family Nights have provided a safe and welcoming space where parents can openly express concerns, ask questions, and learn about the district’s safety measures and available resources.
These gatherings have also given families a voice in shaping how the district communicates and connects with them. Parents have shared ways the schools can improve communication, strengthen outreach, and ensure families feel like an essential part of the school community.
The conversations have also raised awareness among staff members about the linguistic and cultural differences that may affect students’ learning experiences. Concepts that may seem routine for native English speakers can be entirely new for students who are just beginning to learn the language. This awareness is helping educators better understand and support their ESL students.
Limón has experienced that learning firsthand.
"I got into translating only because I was Hispanic," Limón said. "I've had to educate myself. Not all Spanish speakers are from Mexico. Even with the ones that are from Mexico, the cultures are different depending on which part of the country they are from. I've had quite the education."
He believes the program is making a meaningful difference.
"I'm pleased with the program and all it has done to help these families and to make them feel welcome," Limón said. "We are giving them a voice and hope for the future."
Looking Ahead
USD 490 hopes to continue building on this momentum next year. Plans for future ESL Family Nights include inviting building leadership, coaches, counselors, and other staff members to speak about services, opportunities, and available resources.
By putting faces to names, district leaders hope to strengthen partnerships and collaboration between schools and families. The goal is to encourage even more families to participate, access available resources, and feel confident navigating their children’s educational journey.
Through partnership, understanding, and consistent outreach, USD 490 is working to ensure every family feels welcomed, supported, and empowered to help their children succeed.
