El Dorado High School senior Cheyenne Jones organized a bake sale to benefit Circle of Friends (COF). Her goal is to raise $400 to help make the COF field trips more affordable for members.

This club supports social networking between students with disabilities and their non-disabled peers. It fosters inclusion and friendship by organizing activities that allow students to have fun and get to know each other better.

Orders can be placed any time beginning November 10 by emailing jones_cheyenne@usd490.org or on the Circle of Friends Instagram: USD490_Circle_of_Friends. The last day to place orders is November 24, with a final delivery date of November 26.

Items include pumpkin pie ($10), peanut butter pie ($15), chocolate crème pie ($15), pecan pie ($15), red velvet cookies ($8), raspberry white chocolate cookies ($10), chocolate chunk cookies ($8), pumpkin cookies ($8), snickerdoodle cookies ($8), pumpkin rolls ($20), lemon bars ($1.50) and chocolate parfaits ($3).

All of the bake sale items are made by students in the EHS kitchen classroom on Saturdays with in-town deliveries and out-of-town pick-ups on Sunday. There will be a special delivery/pick-up day on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving (November 22) for those who are purchasing items for their holiday meal.

Jones said she has not run into any surprises or obstacles so far, other than learning how to get the pecan pie filling to set up properly.

“The thing with pecan pie is that it’s temperamental,” Jones said. “The first time I made it the filling didn’t set up, but looked right. The next two set up right, but didn’t look right. All of them were delicious, but both taste and looks are important when selling baked goods.”

Persistence was the key for figuring out the right technique, and her grit paid off. Jones made pie after pie until they were turning out the way they should.

“Keep trying, even though you fail,” Jones said. Failure does not mean the end. It should instead be viewed as an opportunity to learn from what did not work, so the next attempt is a little bit better. This is a great lesson for many things in life – you never know when the next try is going to be the one that works.

This is Jones’ second year to do a bake sale to benefit an EHS group. Last year’s proceeds went to Science Olympiad.

There is another COF bake sale featuring different items such as peppermint Oreo truffles and hot cocoa cookies being planned for December 6-18, 2023.
