General Guidelines for Distribution of Flyers to USD 490 Students and Staff
Permission to distribute flyers does not constitute an endorsement of the activity or event by USD 490. This policy applies to the school buildings, grounds and all areas under the control of the school district. If you have questions concerning flyer guidelines, please contact Kimberly Koop, Director of Community Engagement and Recruitment, at 316-322-4800 or by email at kakoop@usd490.org.
The organization requesting flyer distribution must be an organization that resides within the El Dorado USD 490 boundaries or be a partnering/sponsoring entity with the district. Flyers will not be approved for any company or organization that has policies or promotes activities that are inconsistent with the mission and/or policies of USD 490.
The flyer must serve public school-age students in the district, be consistent with assisting in positive educational development, and must not contain any obscene content or include text or graphics that violate existing laws, district standards, or school rules. For example, text and graphics on flyers may not denigrate any group; promote the violation of school rules; depict drugs, tobacco, alcohol, violence, fighting, intimidation, weapons, gang/cult affiliation, religious symbols or inappropriate language; or be sexually suggestive.
Corporate promotion, for-profit advertising, political materials, endorsements, walk-outs, demonstration notices, or similar content will not be permitted.
To ensure families receive adequate information and to minimize questions directed to school staff, flyers must include the following:
a. Flyers must be limited to one page and electronic distributions will automatically contain this disclaimer: “USD 490 permits the distribution of flyers by various organizations on a nondiscriminatory basis regarding matters of potential interest to students and parents. USD 490 neither sponsors nor endorses any organization or activity represented in such flyers and any particular activity, content, or viewpoint set forth in any flyer is solely that of the organization shown.”
b. The name of the sponsoring organization
c. Date, time, and location of the event
d. Any cost associated with the activity or event
e. Phone number or other contact information if parents have questions
Flyers can be displayed up to one month before an event.
Flyers are to be uploaded to PeachJar for approval and digital distribution.
Paper flyers will not be given out directly to students but may be permitted, at the building principal’s discretion, to be placed in a publicly accessible area near the office where staff, students, and parents can view them. These are subject to all of the same guidelines as digital flyers and must be registered with the District Office prior to being placed in a school building. A log of all such flyers will be kept. The district is not responsible for printing or duplicating copies of the material.
Public flyer contents will not be included in the verbal announcements via the schools’ intercom system, on district marquee signs, on district social media, or in newsletters. Exceptions for social media sharing may be made for community educational programs or health information/activities.
Due to safety concerns, visual aesthetics, and volume of requests, community-based signs and banners are prohibited on USD 490 property.
